5 Months and then some

I have a wise and more experienced coworker, Katie the American, who assessed at our Christmas Party that "yep, [we're] still in our honeymoon phase"

I would say it's been true. We had a weirdly warm combo Christmas/ summer break where we spent all our time mountain biking and hiking on blissfully uncrowded trails. We had a brief Welsh roommate, Edryd, whose actual roomies had covid. He was delightful but we're still not sure we can handle roommate life.

January hits hard with some realities.

Sadly there's still no hockey as it's summer and people are still not getting back to Sean about work. A lot of my coworkers have covid. The face of chargeability rears its ugly head too at my job and it seems like unless you've had a front row seat to a recent disaster as a geotech, there isn't much work to be had. It makes us look back at Colorado a little longingly sometimes with its jobs in the space industry, ample hockey, the job I left behind and the DEEP powder dusting all the hills. I think we're getting to the slightly rocky stage of moving somewhere new.

The thing is I remember that it takes eons to get to said powder, it's good to sit in discomfort and it makes me flex my communication muscles. I genuinely had a very bad, no good time with consulting last time I did it but I am much more talkative and insistent now- not that it generates work- but you know. It's good to know you're not the same person.

Sean and I take in American news from the opening segments of late night talk shows because the reality is a little too depressing. I'm just saying, things are in a rut but it's no way enticing us back to our old home just yet.

Our new home is definitely beautiful. Also it's fun convincing Ruby to try swimming in the big lake. We got to the shoulder-height right before she'd actually have to doggy paddle.

  1. Sounds like you two are settling in. That's great! Your adventure is a very large undertaking, so I imagine the adjustment time is also pretty long. I'm glad you got a nice place to live after living in not as nice places in Boulder. Hopefully Sean can find some local work soon. It sounds like you are partaking in all the activities that I hear about on the south island (hiking, biking, climbing, skiing, etc) I imagine there are also lots of water sports? SUP or sailing or ?
    I've enjoyed reading your blog.
